Not nostalgia. A decision.
Every material tells you something about the brand that chose it. Carbon says: lighter, newer, replace me in three years. Steel says: I’ll still be here.
We built every HUHN frame from steel for 15 years. Not because it’s traditional, but because for bikes that are ridden hard and kept long, it’s simply the most honest engineering choice. That philosophy still runs through everything we make and every project HUHN WORKS takes on. Here’s why.
01 It rides differently
Steel doesn’t filter the trail. It translates it.
You feel what the tires are doing, but without harshness. You get feedback, but without stress. That natural compliance keeps you fresher on long days and more confident when it gets rough. And the stiffness where it matters turns every pedal stroke into motion.
It’s the reason steel frames are famously described as feeling alive. Once you’ve ridden it, you know.
02 The right tube in the right place
“Steel” is not one material. The difference between a dull frame and a great one is which steel, where, and why.
We build with heat-treated tubing like Reynolds 853 and 25CrMo4. Heat treatment allows thin, butted walls: thicker at the welded ends where loads concentrate, thinner in the middle where they don’t. The result: less weight, more life in the tube, no compromise in strength.
Tube diameters and wall thicknesses are selected per model, per size and per load case. That’s the part of framebuilding you can’t see, and it’s the part that matters most.
03 Built to outlast trends
Steel has natural fatigue resistance. A well-built steel frame doesn’t age out, it just keeps going.
Corrosion is the classic objection, so we removed it: HUHN frames are KTL-coated inside and out, the same e-coating process the automotive industry uses to protect car bodies for decades. On top of that comes the finish: Cerakote, powder coat or wet paint.
Protected from the inside out, finished to be used. Scratches are stories, not structural problems.
04 Repairable. Serviceable. Yours.
A crashed carbon frame is usually scrap. A damaged steel frame can be repaired. A tube replaced, a braze-on rewelded, and it rides on for years.
The same thinking runs through every standard we chose: threaded T47 bottom brackets instead of creaking press-fit. UDH dropouts that you can buy anywhere, forever. External cable routing where it makes sense, because a bike you can service in your own garage is a bike you’ll actually keep.
Serviceability isn’t a compromise. It’s a feature we design for.
05 It closes the loop
Steel is fully recyclable in cycles that have existed for over a century. No exotic waste stream, no fine print.
But honestly: recycling is the fallback, not the goal. The most sustainable frame is the one you never have to replace. That’s why durability and repairability come first. And why HUHN also supports forest conservation through our partnership with Bergwaldprojekt.
No green slogans. Just decisions that hold up.
And the weight?
Is steel the lightest frame material? No. We won’t pretend otherwise.
But weight is the only number you can check by lifting a bike in a shop. That is exactly why the industry obsesses over it. Out on the trail, control, comfort, durability and trust in your bike count for more than a few hundred grams.
